G'day G'day friends, Oracle laid off 30,000 staff over email at 6:00 am on a Monday morning. Even after working at Oracle for 34 years, Nina was let go via email: here was no warning or even help to get another job. No thank you or loyalty. Oracle really said: “F YOU. Goodbye and good luck.” I take no pleasure in writing an email like this. But this is the reality of the job market. Here’s what you can do if you’re in Nina’s position: 1/ Take one high-value skill: It can be: Sales. Coding. Finance. Marketing. Leadership. Or Nina’s case, product security leader. Anything that your corporate 9-5 job paid you for is a high-value skill that can be resold. 2/ Create a high-ticket offer Once you’ve identified a skill, package it into an offer. Your offer is NOT your service. Your offer is the problem you solve for your customer. The value you will add to their business. Charge $3-5k for this high-ticket, high-touch offer. 3/ Find a business that is desperate for that help. Now, go find paying customers. With Nina, I’d focus on selling his product security skills to softwares start-ups. I’d look at any company that just raised Series A and B venture funding. These companies are flush with cash, and need to find product-market-fit. Before you ask, you don’t need a website, logo, or business plan. What do you need? Your phone. After decades in corporate, your 2-3 clients will be contacts, not strangers. Message them. Tell them about your new direction. Schedule a call and put your offer in front of them. Close the clients who are ready to be closed. Congrats, you’ve started a business. You only need 2-3 clients to be making $10-15k per month.
