taking the perspective pill šŸ’Š

G’day friends, I’ve had a massive week. I’ve taken 2 flights. Moved through 3 different time zones. Spoke on two panels. Meet a dozen new contacts at a business conference. Explored a new country I've never been to. All within a week. It’s been stimulation overload. I find myself wanting to lock myself in a room and be alone. But despite feeling utterly exhausted, I found a bit of perspective. Whenever I feel stressed, I think: What would previous 25 year old Michael think of what I’m doing?...

This system will help you win šŸ‘‘

G’day friends, I recently finished a book by Ian Graham called How To Win The Premier League. Ian was the Head of Data for Liverpool FC for over a decade. I’m a lifelong Manchester United fan. (5 games unbeaten now!!) But even I found this book interesting. From 2014-2024, Liverpool dominated. They won: EFL Cup. Premier League. Champions League. All because they started to use data in their decision making. Let me explain… Winners and losers have the same goals. But what separates them are...

I'm surprised about Sri Lanka šŸ‡±šŸ‡°

G’day friends, I’ve been in Sri Lanka for a few days. The country as exceeded my expectations. The airport is super efficient. The people are friendly. There’s so much history. But a place is defined through food. I tried a local dish called my airport driver told me: Rice and curry. I don’t eat meat, so I ate it vegetarian style. It sounded pretty basic. But I’m open minded. So, I gave it a go. You eat the dish with different flavours. See here: my first rice and curry in Sri Lanka No...

I’m grateful to be walking šŸ‘£

G’day friends, Last week, I was in so much pain. I had a bad flare up of plantar fasciitis. My flat feet and stiff big toe means my foot doesn’t absorb shock well. So when I exercise too much, my foot suffers. It got so bad I woke up with searing pain at 3:32am. I thought someone had stabbed my foot with a hot knife. Walking wasn’t an option. I had to crawl to my kitchen to get the anti-inflammatory meds. (It was ibuprofen, not durians... unfortunately). I swallowed those bad boys so quickly....

Overlooked for that promotion? šŸ”

G’day G’day mates, The time has come to leave Melbourne. I’m catching a flight to Sri Lanka. (with a short stopover in Singapore). I’ve lost count of how many flights I’ve taken this year. At a family catch-up last night, my cousin asked me: Are you happy with what you’re doing? Despite being tired and having plantar fasicities, I could say ā€œyesā€ with no hesitation. What a privilege to be tired chasing something you love. Most corporate executives are tired chasing something they hate. I...

Fire your bad boss🧯

G’day friends, In the Australian summer of 2022, I was miserable. Everyday, I would complain. I worked for one of the worst managers I’ve ever had. She was insecure and kept secrets from the team. Her erratic behaviour created a culture of distrust and paranoia. One moment she would be happy. Another moment she would be asking for a 1:1 to ā€˜chat about things’. She could spend 10 minutes speaking and say nothing of substance. Every Sunday, I had a growing sense of dread. ā€œwhat will she do this...

Why you feel stuck 🫠

G’day G’day friends, I’m lucky to be an uncle. My older brothers are lame (and bald lol): But their kids are super cool with me. I never thought I’d be that cool uncle, but here I am. In total, I’ve got 3 nieces and nephews with another on the way. It’s been quite an experience watching my brothers become fathers. And seeing a little human growing each time I see them. As loyal readers, you all know that I travel a lot. So I don’t get to spend a lot of time together. Every time I see them,...

Your 9-5 job is a dead horse 🐓

G’day G’day friends, In Victoria, we have a day off today to watch horses race. I’m not joking. The first week of November is Melbourne Cup weekend. We get a day off on Tuesday to celebrate horses going fast on grass. The event was introduced in 1861 and is widely considered: ā€œThe race that stops the nationā€ I'm not really interested. But I won’t ever fight against having a day off. What I love most is having a business that gives me a long weekend whenever I needed it. If I want to work 3.5...

Let's go for a spin 🚲

G’day G’day mates, Last week, I was at a formal business event. I was seated on a pretty cool table: These were old friends and contacts in Melbourne. I haven’t seen some of them in years. I wore my go-to 3 piece suit. Slicked back my hair. Got ready to network with people. One of the main speakers was a Victorian politician. As usual, he started speaking about all the great things they’ve done. But even when confronted with setbacks, he reframed them into a positive. I was amazed at his...

we’ve won 3 in a row ⚽

G’day Launch Pilots, I’m a big Manchester United fan. Recently, we’ve won 3 league games in a row. The first time in over 18 months. The first time in Ruben Amorim’s tenure as manager. It’s also not just the wins. It’s the way we played and the teams we beat. The mood has shifted. A few weeks ago, media outlets were calling for Amorim’s resignation. Now they are talking about United being a dark horse as title contenders. Even as a fan, I think that’s a bit too much hype. I’d be happy with a...
