This system will help you win 👑

G’day friends,

I recently finished a book by Ian Graham called How To Win The Premier League.

Ian was the Head of Data for Liverpool FC for over a decade.

I’m a lifelong Manchester United fan.

(5 games unbeaten now!!)

But even I found this book interesting.

From 2014-2024, Liverpool dominated.

They won:

  • EFL Cup.
  • Premier League.
  • Champions League.

All because they started to use data in their decision making.

Let me explain…

Winners and losers have the same goals.

But what separates them are systems.

The team with the best system, wins.

Ian Graham oversaw the data system revolution at Liverpool.

They started to use data to:

  • Buy players.
  • Sell players.
  • Set-up team formations.

Everything and anything in the club now had to be backed by data.

There was less ‘intuition’ and ‘feeling’ being used.

And more data and science.

This sounds logical now.

But it was controversial at the time.

This was Football’s version of Moneyball.

One part of the book stood out to me.

In 2017, there was one player Liverpool wanted to sign.

The data said he would be superstar.

But the ‘feeling’ around him was low.

He had flopped in the Premier League before with Chelsea FC.

No other clubs wanted to sign him.

Can you guess who it was?

It was none other than the Egyptian King, Mo Salah.

Everyone now knows he is a superstar.

But 8 years ago, he was overlooked.

Liverpool swooped in and signed him.

The change was remarkable.

Mo Salah was:

Terrible in one Chelsea system.

World class in another Liverpool system.

Of course, he got better with age.

But it shows that systems beat goals.

Context and environment matters. A lot.

The manager at the time Jurgen Klopp spoke about finding players with ‘extreme’ characteristics and working on tactical plans to cover up weaknesses in their games.

You can take the same approach.

Imagine if you applied the high value corporate skillset to another team.

You’re overlooked now in your job.

But as a solopreneur you can monetize that skillset in infinite ways.

You trade the corporate system for the entrepreneurship system.

You've already got everything you need to succeed, just like Mo Salah.

All you need is a proper system to make you a superstar.

Don't change your goals. Change the system you operate in.
