The viral content trap 🪤

I went viral late in 2024.

And it was the worst thing that happened to my biz.

I got the wrong type of people into my funnel.

People who wanted free stuff.
People who didn't want to invest in themselves.

Lots of viewers, no buyers.

This meant I paid to have them on my list.

And my conversion rates dropped.

It felt like the hug of death.

Virality feels good.

The dopamine spike is appealing (and highly addictive).

The cheese in the mousetrap always is.

The new people ruined the experience of the existing people.

I spent the next several weeks cleaning up my list.

Repairing the damage.

Unsubscribing the wrong people.

Because the wrong traffic can kill your business.

I don’t need more people.

I need the right people.

You’ve probably heard the ā€œ1,000 true fansā€ theory by Kevin Kelly.

1,000 true fans spending $100 each with your biz.

That's 1,000 x $100 = $100,000.

In an online world of billions, finding 1,000 people is easy.

But you don’t even need that many.

You only need 2-5 highly aligned, high-ticket clients to build a wildly profitable one-person business.

A small, powerful community beats a massive, disengaged audience every time.

Community > Virality.

All day. Everyday. F*** going viral.

P.S

Doors to my Launch To 5k Inner Circle Mentorship are open.

We will work together over 16 weeks to get you to $5k/month recurring.

Not with a big audience.

But with the right audience.

Reply "VIRAL", and I’ll send the details.

Doors close in 2 days..

(prices will rise after this)

Stay Limitless,

Michael "Quality over quantity" Lim

P.S. The durian-loving community is a small and smelly group, but committed.

My email yesterday struck a chord. I received emails like this: While I love hearing from you guys, these emails break my heart I can’t help but feel terrible. I know exactly what it was like to be in this position. I’m not in my 60s, but I’m familiar with being and feeling stuck. 2 years ago, my first business was failing me. I did well in my first year. But I didn’t build my sales engine. My clients ghosted me. A big proposal fell through. I got hit with a massive tax bill. I couldn’t deny...

I would say sorry, but I’m not sorry at all. In fact, I enjoyed it. And he started it. (So it’s really his fault) Matt reached out to work with me last year. He told me he was stuck. He couldn’t crack a monthly income goal. He had been working with a coach who wasn’t getting any results. Even after six months of work together. He still had: No sales system. No offer clarity. No real progress. When we started together, we tore down his biz. Rebuilt his offers. Simplified his message....

One of my friends’ start-ups got copied. He has a business-to-business software as a service. I won’t go into too much detail. (to avoid future copycats) But he came across a website that copied everything. The copywriting. The product. The positioning. The ideal client profile. Even the branding looked the same. He was anxious for days. He and his co-founder kept struggling to understand what to do. They contacted clients and reassured them. This was a massive threat to his business. When I was...
