G'day G'day friends, After yesterday's email, I got a bunch of questions about my book. (Thanks again for all your support) One question that kept coming up was some variation of: “How did you know what to write?” It’s a simple question. But one that most authors don’t think about. Simple: I tested the idea with my audience BEFORE I started writing. I compiled every DM and message I’ve received. I studied the transcript of every coaching call that I’ve ever been on. I looked at Google search data and popular questions on Reddit. And the most important thing? I started writing online. By writing online, I could:
Now, I write every article with a book in mind. So when a sentence, topic, or headline resonates, I can catalogue it for a future book. In some ways, I started writing this book back in 2019. Many bestselling books are now written this way. James Clear’s Atomic Habits was a collection of the highest performing blogs. The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck by Mark Manson was the high performing blog post with the same name. 12 Rules For Life by Jordan Peterson originated from a viral Quora answer. 99% of authors write what they THINK people want. Best selling authors write what they KNOW people want. Writing and hoping for the best is not a book selling strategy. This approach applies to more than writing books. You should be selling before you build any product. Digital products should be sold via a landing page. Services should be sold via a Google Doc. Sell before you build.
