Overlooked for that promotion? 🔭

G’day G’day mates,

The time has come to leave Melbourne.

I’m catching a flight to Sri Lanka.

(with a short stopover in Singapore).

I’ve lost count of how many flights I’ve taken this year.

At a family catch-up last night, my cousin asked me:

Are you happy with what you’re doing?

Despite being tired and having plantar fasicities,

I could say “yes” with no hesitation.

What a privilege to be tired chasing something you love.

Most corporate executives are tired chasing something they hate.

I remember when I wanted to be a Director.

I was overlooked for the promotion at first.

They hired someone brand new.

The kicker?

I had to train and manage the new person.

Yes, you heard that right.

I was basically managing a newly hired director.

But was paid and had a Manager title.

That experience felt like a kick in the teeth with steel boots.

But I kept my head down and kept plugging away.

They promised me in six months I’d get the promotion.

I had a carrot to chase.

I worked hard. Long hours. Taking on more.

Over that time, I brought in 60% of the yearly revenue.

I got the promotion.

But the day I got it, I felt so empty.

I looked at my Executive Director and asked:

Do I want this person’s lifestyle and workload?

She literally spent all day in back-to-back meetings.

She wasn’t healthy or effective.

The extra pay didn’t make up for the responsibility and workload.

I quit shortly after the promotion.

I still work hard.

But I get to keep the rewards of my output.

I own everything and enjoy the benefits of efficiency.

There’s no one keeping me from my next promotion.
