Nobody approves my leave

G’day, G’day friends!

Last week, I was in Uluwatu with a few friends:

We decided we all needed a break, and left on Friday morning.

On my bike ride there, I thought about what I'd just done.

Nobody approved my leave.

Nobody asked when I’d be back online.

I don’t need to tell anyone anything.

It’s beautiful.

I’ll never take this small slice of freedom for granted.

Jocko Willink has a line: discipline equals freedom.

In business, mine is: structure equals freedom.

Get the structure wrong, and you build something worse than your 9-to-5.

No paid leave, no healthcare, and a boss who never logs off

(that’s you, ya fool).

Get it right, and you’re free of it.

Here’s what I mean by structure.

If you sell hours, a weekend away can cost you dollars.

Every day off is technically unpaid.

Don’t be an on-demand order taker.

But if you sell an outcome at a fixed price, the client pays for the result.

Not your effort or time.

The clock stops mattering.

That’s what monetizing your expertise properly gets you.

You’re no longer on call 24/7.

Here’s the second thing, my durian friend.

The friends I’m with all make a living from what they know.

They are health coaches, accountants, and marketing experts.

So I get to hear how other people price and package their expertise, with nobody holding back.

You can’t get that from a book or a prompt.

So two things decide whether you get weekends like this:

  1. How your business is structured. Outcomes at a fixed price, or hours on a clock.
  2. Who you’re around. People building the same kind of business, or people who think you’re mad for trying.

Try this today.

Look at your offer and ask:

Would I still get paid if I took Friday off?

If the answer is no, the structure is the problem. And structure equals freedom.
