As you know, I’m living in Indonesia.

Today is very special on the country's calendar.

Why?

Today is Indonesia’s Independence Day.

The exact phrase is Selamat Hari Kemerdekaan.

Feel free to impress all your Indonesian friends with that bit of Bahasa Indonesia.

In the lead-up to this special day, I’ve been doing a lot of reading on Indonesia's history.

Like all history, it’s complex and has been politically rewritten over time.

Even my birth country, Singapore, celebrated Independence last week.

Singapore's birth is riddled with controversy.

I won’t get into all the nitty-gritty details.

In my reading of history, the only thing that stuck with me is that all type of independence is a struggle.

The real hard work begins AFTER independence.

Building a new country identity, story, and symbolism is no easy feat.

Some countries can stay stuck for decades after independence.

It’s the exact same experience when you declare independence from your 9-5 job.

99% of solopreneurs think that the hardest bit is quitting.

But the real work is just beginning.

You need to craft positioning, content, emails, offers, and a delivery system.

This doesn't come naturally for most ex-corporate executives.

Not to mention the jarring identity change that can cripple your sense of belonging.

Independence from a job is about taking more responsibility than you’re comfortable with.
