I was lied to 😔

After I left my 9-5 job, I started a government procurement consultancy.

I would help construction and infrastructure companies win government contracts.

In 2023, I sold that business.

I was stoked. It felt amazing.

My first business win.

I was only 28 years old.

But it was a lie.

I was misled on:

  • The health of the business.
  • The abilities of one of the co-founders.
  • The vision and direction of the business.

The worst part?

The business only worked because I did.

Neither of my business partners were good at sales or marketing.

So, I took on that responsibility.

I did all the lead generation, sales calls, offers, and pricing.

We quickly scaled to $120k+ p/m

It sounds great on paper,

But, no me, no money.

I had to do everything.

With a team of 5, all my work was feeding other people’s mouths.

I felt trapped. And angry.

This wasn’t what I signed up for.

After a solo trip to Asia, I realized I need to quit.

This wasn’t sustainable.

I was miserable.

I came back to Australia and quit.

I’ve been traveling across Southeast Asia for the last year.

The one thing that saved my Durians?

Long-form writing.

Throughout the entire time, I kept writing online.

I had accumulated a large following, and grew my email list.

This allowed me to quit my job and business and start fresh.

Because when you have distribution, you have freedom.

I have the freedom to reinvent myself.

Over and over again.

If you’re a corporate 9-5 worker, start writing online.

It’s the lowest barrier to entry, easiest to start, and free.

Your escape from your corporate job is one long-form article at a time.

Stay Limitless,

Michael ā€˜freedom writer’ Lim

P.S - I’ve arrived in Beijing, China. I’m staying in one of the best accommodation places. My room has a set of rings and a pull-up bar!
