1,000 words keeps the doctor away 😷

G'day G'day friends,

Whenever I found myself stuck with my book, my coach would tell me:

Sit down and write 1,000 crappy words.

Don’t judge what comes out.

Just write.

Put the words out on a page.

And then you can edit and judge afterwards.

Surprisingly, most of the 1,000 words I wrote were usable.

Don’t get me wrong, they weren’t perfect.

But nothing I write the first time is perfect.

I had to turn on the creative tap and let whatever was inside my brain flow out.

This is how I uncover gems hidden in the dirt and muck of my mind.

And then the magic happens in the edit.

Even writing these emails requires me to switch off my judgmental brain.

I write out what is in my stream of consciousness all at once.

And then I go back and edit the raw materials after.

The moral of the story is that volume is the answer to almost every creative problem.

With volume, I can make changes.

With volume, I can spot mistakes.

It’s much easier to steer a moving ship than a stationary one.

Over his lifetime, Shakespeare wrote over 500+ plays, sonnets and ballads.

But he is only known for 5-6 of them.

Yet, we don’t seem to judge the other 495+ creative flops.

We love the ones that resonated.

Shakespeare couldn’t get to the gems without publishing something that sucked.

The same logic applies to you.

Feeling stuck? Create.

Feeling tired? Create.

Feeling overwhelmed? Create.

The answer to most problems is more creating less consumption.

Let’s Launch Together,

Michael “volume is everything’’ Lim.
